I'd like to recommend the last novel Ms. Butler wrote before she died, "Fledgling". It's a modern twist on the vampire story, and I think it was the most engrossing of her books that I've read so far.
I felt the same way about The Parable of the Sower. She seemed to come so close to having a really great post-apocolyptic fable, but then missed the mark by bogging down in the set up of their new society.
