» Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell: A Novel, Susanna Clarke
I mildly enjoyed reading the first 600 pages of this book, really enjoyed the next 100, and was totally let down by the last 50. It's readable and moderately good, but it meanders and the ending seems to be just a way to finish the book, not the natural outcome of the story. (Dickens is long, but the story flows into the end, and the intervening pages are filled with meaningful content. Yes, he was writing for word count. Yes, he was genius.) Dickens is the correct comparison, by the way, not Jane Austen (mentioned by many reviewers who apparently have not read her. I can only assume Austen was mentioned in the book's publicity materials). [ 09.29.12 ]
