I've never had the original dish, so this version may be perfectly authentic, but I think there is too much tamarind in this dish—it overpowers everything else. I can barely taste the mint, and I can't taste the jalapeno at all. I will make it again with less tamarind, and perhaps another hot pepper (I used 1 of the 3 she called for, since we are not fiery-hot cuisine lovers). But it will likely take several iterations to get the balance in these flavors right. Having said that, this tamarind flavor is strangely addictive. [ 07.25.06 ]
